UiTM Jalan Othman 1st Internationalization Event

Since 12 years of UiTM Health Sciences Faculty establishment, Occupational Therapy Student Association (OTHESA) managed to break the tradition as we have succeeded in organizing the first internationalization event in the School of Health Sciences residents. It was the Singapore Malaysia Occupational Therapy Symposium at NTUC One Marina Boulevard, Singapore. Conducting such a trip was not all easy. With the budget as low as RM 800.00 provided by the faculty, we strived to get extra budget from other companies. 25 delegates from Malaysia went there including young contract lecturers and seniors lecturers.

OTHESA’s ultimate internationalization program will be MFCE. MFCE will be a benchmark, eye-opener, guidance, motivation and pride to all students. We hope that our mission to make this program as an annual event will come true.

MFCE at Singapore

6 MFCE members went to Singapore attending 9th Singapore Malaysia Occupational Therapy Symposium at NTUC One Marina Boulevard, Singapore on 13th and 14th June 2008.

The 2 days symposium was paced of paper presentation from Occupational Therapist including Malaysia. On the first day ( 13th June 2008), the participants had a half day workshop in the area of mental health by Ms. Suchada Sakomsatian. The workshop was using Appreciation Influence Control (AIC) techniques for gaining community participation to care for ex-psychiatric patients living in the community. The approach shared on how to involve the community participants in the planning, implementation, and evaluation stages. The ultimate aim was to empower the community to care when an OT has discharge the client into the society.

On the 2nd day, 4 sessions provided for 22 research and case study presentations. Between those sessions, there was a student session and representatives from each institute had presented and shared their knowledge and information about the current situations and some updates about the university. UiTM (Ammar), UKM and NYP (Nanyang Polytechnic).

Many problems arised after entering Woodlands. Insufficient budget, miscommunication when reserving the accommodation, lost when finding the Symposium venue and others.

However, we managed to make it happily as we enjoy of what we were doing. Everybody gave their best to help the Event Manager, Ms Emillia who is also the MFCE member, in making the international trip to Singapore successful. We achieved the ultimate objective which is to be an eye opener to all Health Sciences residents in organizing an internationalization event.

We found the sponsorship ourselves, we struggled studying references as we wanted to share our knowledge with those Singaporean students.

In the end, we believe that it is difficult but at the same time possible to be a good all rounded student. Academic alone would not fit the world if the soft skills are still in infant.

To all friends, take this opportunity to organize an internationalization program while time last.

A Noon With Dr. Hamzah

Dr. Hamzah Fansuri Bin Hassan, Deputy Dean Of Health Sciences Faculty had been interviewed by Munzir, MFCE members on 5th June 2008 at 12pm. The purpose of the interview was to get an overview from UiTM authority's perspectives towards MFCE program. Below was the script during the interview session.

1) Tell me your opinion about the internationalization program which was organized by the students?

I agree that MFCE program is one of the best program for the Faculty of Health Sciences. MFCE is expected to become a good platform as it will gives an exposure for the students to internalize their program. Besides, it can be a preparation for students to learn about independence and striving for success with their own strength.

2) There is an issue regarding UiTM financial support for MFCE program that is still pending since February 2008. Can we have your explanation regarding that issue?

On February 2008, the faculty approved MFCE program to be organized without any financial support. However, MFCE program can also be supported from UiTM Academic Affair (HEA) because internationalization program is beyond faculty affair.

3) How about a month before depart and MFCE program insufficient 20% from the total funding, will the faculty help us?

Of course, we are willing to help MFCE. However the 20% doesn't indicate the exact amount of money unless it is approved that the amount of money gained from student's efforts is optimally enough.

Internationalization

Picture : Ammar (MFCE Director) with UiTM VC

"Program pendedahan kepada aspek antarabangsa dan globalisasi perlu digarap dan dititikberatkan di kalangan pelajar UiTM supaya mereka lebih berketerampilan", said Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Bin Abu Shah in his new year speech at Dewan Sri Budiman, Shah Alam.

Internationalization starts with student representative in the world-class competition such as student in free Enterprise (SIFE), debates and quiz. As the other students aspired them in bringing UiTM into the world-class environment, they start in organizing events such as academic visit, attending symposium and presenting research/case study.

Prof. Dato' Dr. Nasuddin Bin Othman, Deputy Vice Counselor (Student Affairs and Alumni) declares internationalization as a theme for Department of Student Affairs. The department is working hard to implement the aim and mission. They are ready to give their best support for students in guidance, information, networking, potential company sponsorship and financing.

Students has the opportunities in organizing the internationalization program. However, not all students succeed in organizing big events. It is said that the organizer needs to be physically and mentally strong for being able in succeeding the event.

The objectives

Finland has its own identity and uniqueness compared to other countries in Europe. Due to this fact, Faculty of Health Science, UiTM Malaysia has always been accepting clinical visits from the Occupational Therapy’s students of Finland. It shows their interest in our educational. Now, it is the time for us to return their clinical visits and learn their country’s educational approach.

We choose Finland as our destination for clinical practice due to their competition and innovation, besides that, they have their own perspective of higher education. It is also one of the largest supplies for educated and skilled labors. The country is a unique example of how a country can rapidly transform itself from a resource-based economy into a base of innovative and intellectual technologies. Since the Finnish citizens are well cared for, we believe that Occupational Therapists’ there have been doing a good job for the targeted community.

The golden opportunity to initiate this international clinical practice has opened a huge opportunity for UiTM and its students. Some of the benefits that may be garnered from this event would be:

To enhance UiTM image as a world-class university, capable of hosting internationally renowned events.

● As a platform to share opinions on academic advancement and intellectual attainment.
● To encourage more participation from UiTM students in international events.
● To further strengthen UiTM’s brand by producing all-rounder students.
● To integrate UiTM’s social communication with international environment.
● To expose Occupational Therapy students in specialized clinical practice areas such as special education, occupational safety and health, and community rehabilitation.

Break The Tradition

There are 2 main objectives for the program which are to expose Occupational Therapy students in specialized clinical practice areas such as special education, occupational safety and health, and community rehabilitation and; to encourage more participation from UiTM students in international events.

MFCE have taken the responsibility to intiate the project that practically done by the UiTM management themselves. The UiTM administration sent a few students who were very excellent in academic to undergo a practical and clinical attachment for a few month. However, MFCE gathered 8 all-rounded students that have their best in academic, leadership, survival skills and towering personality to plan, organize, raise the fund and undergo a clinical attachment for a week @Finland.

As if MFCE succeed in the clinical attachment, it is sure the other student generations will continue with the clinical attachment in longer time.
